Tuberculosis is still a major health problem in the country. It is not only the low income people who are affected by this disease, but anyone can get tuberculosis. More than 4 thousand 100 people die of tuberculosis every day in the world. Bangladesh is one of the eight countries that account for two-thirds of the total number of TB patients in the world. Tuberculosis is not only for the poor, but everyone is at risk of contracting the disease. Especially when the immunity of the body decreases, the risk of tuberculosis increases. Tuberculosis germs can also invade lungs damaged by disease or pollution. Diabetes, kidney disease, malnutrition, alcoholism, drug use, smoking—all increase the risk of tuberculosis.
How Tuberculosis Spreads: Tuberculosis or TB is an airborne infectious disease. The disease is spread by contact with an infected person and enters the body and first takes shelter in the lungs. Not all TB patients spread TB germs. Those who can spread the infection, sneeze, cough, or even talk, spreading TB germs in the air. This germ stays in the air for several hours. Airborne bacteria can enter the lungs of a healthy person during normal breathing. This is how the infection spreads to others. Tuberculosis germs can also be spread by drinking raw milk. In densely populated or closed places, the risk of this germ being transmitted to others is high.
Tuberculosis is treated almost free of charge under the National Tuberculosis Control Programme. Those at high risk are also given the necessary treatment. Tuberculosis drugs are also provided by the government at the upazila level. So there is nothing to worry about the cost of treatment. “He who has tuberculosis, there is no protection” – such words are meaningless now. Tuberculosis is curable with proper treatment.
Be Aware: Cough or fever for more than three weeks, bleeding with cough, weight loss, lethargy and fatigue, loss of appetite or loss of appetite, abdominal pain, any abnormal lumps or lumps anywhere on the body, must contact the nearest health care center. Early diagnosis makes treatment easier and physical complications are less.
