How to get rid of the cold?
- Sweet potatoes, beet roots, and certain types of pumpkin are rich in beta-carotene, which our bodies convert into vitamin A.
- Vitamin A keeps the mucosal lining of our nose and lungs strong which protects the nares and lungs from infection.
- Also red fruits like oranges, mangoes, watermelons work in the same way.
- Besides, if there is sufficient amount of onion and garlic in the food, the chance of virus and bacterial infection is reduced. Onions and garlic contain an oil that protects the body from viral and bacterial infections.
- Moreover, the role of vitamin C in avoiding cold or flu has been proven long ago. People living in cold climates have been shown to be able to ward off colds by consuming high levels of vitamin C.
- Getting enough vitamin D through sunlight or other sources also helps protect the body from colds.
Vitamin C was the most common treatment for respiratory tract infections in the 1930s. It became more popular in the 1970s when Nobel laureate Linus Poling showed that vitamin C was more effective in relieving colds.
A recent study by the Cochrane Group showed that the role of vitamin C in getting rid of colds is not much. It is not harmful to the body and excess vitamin C is excreted from the body with urine.
But zinc can be harmful if the levels are exceeded. So in that case it is better to follow the doctor’s advice.
When to consult a doctor?
Doctor Afroza Akhtar said that colds usually get better within a few days, but if the cold lasts for a long time, one should consult a doctor.
“If you have a cold for more than seven consecutive days or if you have a high fever with a cold for more than three days in a row, you should consult a doctor.”
Miz Akhtar advises not to wait for seven days to consult a doctor in case of children. He says that if any child has a cold for more than three days the parents should immediately seek Doctor’s consultation.
Miz Akhter commented that if you have breathing problems or chest pain during a cold, you should consult a doctor immediately.
In addition, if the condition of the cold worsens suddenly, even if there is diabetes, heart disease, kidney or lung disease, a doctor should be consulted quickly.
